Everyone must have heard at least one time that these movies are affecting today’s youth’s behavior. Is that correct? Maybe it is right. At least the addiction portrayal in Bollywood movies is not correct. For some of the teenagers, this portrayal might even be glorifying.
Addiction Portrayal in Movies –
There are many movies that portray drinking and smoking almost in a luxurious way, such as showing a rich people’s party where every person is holding a glass of wine. They might only wish to portray the rich class, however, among the teenagers, this might give the image that anyone who can drink beer is living a rich man’s life.
An Example – Aashiqui 2
Aashiqui 2 is a famous movie about romance. I remember I was in school when this movie was released and became a hit. Everyone was only talking about it, the songs were sung all day long.
The plot of this movie was quite simple where the main hero, Rahul, had an alcohol addiction, he wanted to make his come back to the music industry with his lover Arohi but his alcohol addiction didn’t let him, and in the end, he committed suicide.
Do you know what was wrong with their portrayal of alcohol addiction? The treatment was not right at all!
The Wrong Treatment of Addiction in Aashiqui 2
In Aashiqui 2 they showed that to help Rahul, Arohi isolated him, taking him away from everything to only focus on helping him. This is where she went wrong. Addiction is not something you can recover from by isolating yourself. Instead, this would get you depressed. And this is what happened with Rahul. He became so negative that he ended up committing suicide. Aarohi should have admitted him to a rehabilitation centre in Noida or whatever location they wanted.
The Right Way to Treat Addiction
If even love cannot help you in addiction recovery then what can? A rehab facility. Yes, a rehab facility is what you need to recover from addiction. Do you know why? Because the right way to treat addiction is to connect with people, not by isolating them. This was told in a new TED Talk where the British journalist Johann Hari proved that the opposite of addiction is “Connection.”
Conclusion –
Now we know that Bollywood movies do not portray addiction correctly. Furthermore, they are not even portraying the right way of addiction recovery. Love is necessary but in addiction rehabilitation, a rehab facility would help you more than your partner’s love. Therefore, if any of you or someone you know is struggling with addiction then let them join the Nasha Mukti Kendra in Noida or their closeby location. These rehab facilities join all addicts to help them recover fast.
